Egg Money Card Review

The Egg Money Mastercard is a cashback credit card, but it's got some very strange features on top of that.

Rather than being a straightforward credit card, Egg have chosen to add some some bank account type features too. So it's a Mastercard, but if you put a credit balance into your account then Egg pay you 4% interest on the balance..! All sounds very odd, but the intention is provide a convenient way to balance finances - by moving leftover payday cash (once known bills are paid) to the card so it earns interest while you spend it. The alternative would seem to be just switching to a good current account!

BUT, this is a credit card, and it does offer a good rate of cashback at 1%. The extra features just seem confusing and gimmicky, but they can simply be ignored of course.

The cashback on this card is capped at £200 per year - but that is the same as spending £20,000 on your card so will be fine for most people. Make sure you look at the Amex Platinum card too though as their huge introductory cashback rate of 5% can make all the difference.

Egg Money Card: The Final Score

The 'extra features' of this card are bemusing, and I'm not sure who they are meant to appeal to. But if you spend more than £20,000 a year on your card, you will do better with the Amex Platinum Card anyway. If you will be spending less you'll still be better off with the Amex card for the first year due to that big introductory rate, and it will take up to 2 years before the Egg card starts to win overall - but 2 years is a very long time in the cashback credit card market so best to grab the best rate now and look again in another year, and that means Amex wins again.
