The idea is very simple. The more you spend on your credit card, the more cash the card company give you back. Typical cashback rates are 0.5% to 1%. So that means if you spend £100 on your card, and your card pays 1% cashback, you get back £1. It may not sound much at first, but it certainly builds up over the year. Then, just when you'd forgotten all about it, you get a nice bonus of a couple of hundred pounds out of the blue.

And if you know you're actually earning cashback, you can specifically buy things on your credit card that you might otherwise pay for with cash or a debit card.

Should I Get a Cashback Card?

Cashback cards are a good option if you pay off your balance in full every month. Since you're not paying any interest, good deals on interest rates or 0% balance transfers are of no benefit to you. So instead, cashback is an incentive you really can make the most of. (If you don't clear your balance every month, chances are you will be better off with a low interest rate card instead)
